Why won't my audio books play in itunes?

Downloaded two new audio books to my itunes last night. Tryed to move them to my classic ipod. Won't let me do that. I notice the books say "protected." Does that mean I can only listen to them on my computer. That would not make sense. Also, why won't they simply play, like other older audio books I already own?
