Ejecting ext HDD (OS Journaled) not possible with Safari open

Why is it that whenever I plug in my external HDD, which I have partitioned as one is storage and the other contains OS X, when I attempt to eject it I cannot do so without Safari having to be quit. I find this occurs with Chrome too and probably does with all web browsers. It says that they're using the partiton, what?!

MacBook (white), Mac OS X (10.6.8), 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Could be a widget, an extension, or other browser add-on you may have installed. Have you restarted the computer since this started? If not, then give that a try.

Oh, and monitor the Console information using the Console application in your Utilities folder to see what happens either when the drive is connected or ejected. Possible a log entry will reveal what's happening.

Sep 1, 2011 4:36 PM in response to Kappy

You wouldn't believe but every time I've had the console open, ready and waiting to capture the data before I plug in the extHDD and then to record after it didn't ever have a problem. But, this time (boyed with too much confidence) I had plugged it in without the console open and it was like old times again, so, here's a clip of the console data:

Can you see what's wrong?

Sep 1, 2011 10:03 PM in response to Hamper

Based solely on the small sample of console log you show, try the following:

You appear to have a preference pane called X-Tunes. Open the X-Tunes preference pane.

In that prefpane there's a control with the title "X-Tunes Remote Control is:". Click the Off radio button to its right.

Close the preference pane. Can you eject the disk now?

The basis for this is I see mention of an app called X-Tunes Daemon in that sample console log. That app is launched when you specify that "X-Tunes Remote Control is:" as On. I don't know if this is the source of your problem. Like I said I suggesting this based only on the small sample of console log you supplied.

Sep 2, 2011 3:56 AM in response to X423424X

X-Tunes, that's a old one. I thought I got rid of that ages ago. I found this discussion online about uninstalling it, tried that but still getting the problem:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2776013?start=0&tstart=0

Not sure what part of the console log you want, is it under Database Searches: All Messages? This seems to be the overview for all other departments as it were. To be honest I'm not even sure if X-Tunes is uninstalled, although all the signs are that is has been, but something like that doesn't even show up in activity monitor, I'm sure then there is some sort of Terminal command that can reveal these hidden processes?

So, end result, I'm still getting the issue of not being able to eject my extHDD.

Turn it off from it's preference pane like I mentioned previously (close the preference panes). Trash the X-Tunes.prefPane from your PreferencePanes directory. Apparently the thing does not create any login or startup items. That's all it takes to uninstall it.

As for looking at all the currently active processes, in terminal type the following command:

ps ax

You might want to post that here unless you see something that jumps out at you.

Sep 2, 2011 11:23 AM in response to X423424X

I did actually use that method before, so it should be uninstalled, I can't find it in the results from that code you gave me anyway:

Wow, a lot of potential suspects in that list so I am not sure where to begin:

privoxy

python

Growl

Classic Menu

Displaperture (?)

I Love Stars

CapSee

Jumpcut

HardwareGrowler

FastScripts

Cloud

UnPlugged

AppTrap

DiskWar[rior?]

plus a few I can't determine due to you using or not using the wrong encoding settings in terminal so I see ?M^S??M^SM^T?M^S??M^S??M^SM^T?M^SM^S?M and [ ?M^WM^I°].app and S?M^\?f?M^\?ri.app in the list.

Also you should use a wider terminal window since many lines appear truncated.

Does your disk unmount problem happen only when you are using a browser or at any time?

Sep 2, 2011 1:02 PM in response to X423424X

privoxy

python

The rest I know about but not sure what the "python" thing is, it could be "FastScripts"? Yea, I have a lot of background processes, anout 400MB worth, but that's how it is. I'm like Ace Face out of Quadraphenia with all my wing mirrors on my bike, it's how I roll.

Anyway, here we go again, you know before I just did a strait fowrad c&p. I didn't realise that he window had to be a certain size, I'm only on a 13.1" White MacBook screen here, it's a bit awkward, why doesn't the text carry down to the next line?

For some thing like "?M^S??M^SM^T?M^S??M^S??M^SM^T?M^SM^S?M^SM^X?M^S?.app" it could be Textedit, which I renamed to "ⓣⓔⓧⓣⓔⓓⓘⓣ" (because I think it looks better). I ticked all boxes under the "Encodings" pane but found another one under "Settings: Advanced" pane that I left at "Unicode (UTF-8)" - not sure which one to choose, I tried the "7" and "16" variety but that made things worse (some of the chars were in Chinese!).

What do you think now?

Sep 2, 2011 3:46 PM in response to Hamper

Without going into details, Python is a computer language, sort of in the class like Java. It's running something called zwserver.py on your machine. And a google search of zwserver.py seems to imply it's to attach to a "Minecraft" server. Does that ring any bells?

You didn't answer my last question in my previous post. Does this unmount problem only happen while you are running a browser or at any time?

Sep 2, 2011 3:55 PM in response to X423424X

Oh yea, Python's like Javascript or something, sure, but I don't know what Micraft is, isn't that like a really sqaure looking game? Not sure what that's for exactly. It's not like a keylogger or anything I hope - calling back to a server?

Oh, sorry, no the only time I get a problem is when Safari's open, otherwise ejection happens as expected. It means turning Safari off and I hate that, I don't know why it does it. Like I mention, it's partitioned, one part has a bootable OS (OS X) and the other is just a normal stroage partition.

Thanks.
