Why is my iMovie project so huge?

I'm using iMovie '09 and I created a project that is 90% pictures and 10% video with several voiceovers and titles.

The project is 46 minutes long, done in widescreen with video from my photo camera (good quality, not great).

The project is exported to the media browser. The exported video is 1.25 gb (I hit "show package contents" on the project and found it).
