What MacKeeper popup? Did you install MacKeeper? If so, you should uninstall it immediately. (That's apparently easier said than done... you may want to consider a tool like AppZapper ($12.95) or AppCleaner (free).

If you are simply seeing MacKeeper popup ads when browsing the web, you have a couple things to try. First, you should alert any site that causes those popups to appear that you're not going to be visiting again due to the inappropriate ads. Secondly, you can go to Safari -> Safari Extensions and find (and install) AdBlock.

Uninstall MacKeeper, it's bad news.

In Activity Monitor (in your Applicaitons> Utilities folder) Force Quit the MacKeeper or Zeobit process, disable it as a log in item in your System Preferences > Accounts.

Use Easy Find to find all instances of zeobit or mackeeper and delete. reboot.

I have not to my knowledge installed MacKeeper. I bought it used, but I took it to a Mac specialist and had it checked and the os upgraded. I usually do that myself, but I had taken in two other laptops at the same time, and needed to make certain I had something reliable whiloe they were being worked on.

Thank you for your suggestions. I never tried to install it, because from the nature of the pop-up ads, I assumed it was a virus. They are that bad and annoying.

If you bought the machine used, and didn't erase the hard drive and reinstall the system, it could have MacKeeper as well as who knows what else installed. You need to restore it to factory condition. See:

I saw this, your rather old reply, to a problem I currently have. I did not install the MacKeeper, but have these annoying pop-up windows and adds. I have tried to search for the AddBlock and found it on a website called Softpedia, but it does also seem to be on other sites. Can I trust Softpedia and install the AddBlock from them? From which web can I safely download the AppCleaner?

A lot has changed since 2011 when this topic started. These days, MacKeeper ads are often the result of adware. See my Adware Removal Guide. Also, note that I do not recommend the use of apps like AppZapper or AppCleaner anymore. They pretty much never do the job properly unless the app that needs removing doesn't need uninstalling in the first place (ie, if you could just drag it to the trash to remove it).

Thank you so much for your attention to my problem. I did go through the path finder on your Adware Removal Guide, as I (like you mentioned) was having a "Could not find server" problem when trying to install AdwareMedic.

I do though not have any of the "problematic" files to remove. The only 2 files I have in the pathfinder under "LaunchAgents" are:

com.adobe.ARM.202f408 (loooooong number).............plist and

com.google.keystone.agent.plist

Do you have any other ideas as to how to get rid of the add pop-ups and MacKeeper?

In that case, you have the Downlite (aka VSearch, aka DynamicPricer) adware installed at a minimum. See:

I downloaded Adblock. It's too early to tell but I will be so happy if I get less ads on my Mac Thanks! Incredibly easy to do. It's free but I gave them $20
