Apple TV not recognizing IP address.

Hello,

I bought my apple TV back in May. It worked fine at the beginning.

I started having problems about 3 weeks ago, we bought a new Netgear router, got everything set up, Imac works just fine, wireless computers work fine but my Apple TV is not recognizing the IP address, it tells me that the INTERNET CONNECTION HAS FAILED.

We have tried turning off/unplugging the apple tv and plugging it back in.

We also tried manually typing the new IP address but for some reason it loses it and will not recognize it. so that didn't work.

Turning the power off from the router and nothing.

We have it hard wired so we don't have wifi problems, basically the apple tv cannot read anything, I can't see netflix, you tube, etc. I don't know what else to try or where to go from here.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Was the Apple TV connected by ethernet to your previous router, are you using the same cable, have you tried another cable or another port on your router.

Im sorry Im new to some of this stuff so im not sure what the ethernet is. We cable is new and it worked at the beginning, but the wifi doesn't work either with the apple tv anyway, I will try another port today and see if that does it...

Ethernet is the name of the protocol for connecting the devices by wire rather than wifi. If you are using wifi try disabling the wifi security for diagnostics.

Could you please clarify which devices are connected by wire and which are connected by wifi.

Hi!

I got it. My Netgear routher does say Ethernet and has 4 ports. 2 of which I am using. 1 goes to my imac for better connectivity, the other one to the apple TV.

I have 1 other laptop pc that has a wireless connection.

OK, so just to recap.

Did you have it all wired before you changed your router.

You say you started having problems, id that after you changed your router or before you changed your router.

We had it wired with the previous router and it worked just fine. But we haven't been able to make it work since we got the new router 😟

Have you tried another Ethernet cable or another port on the router. Is it set to use DHCP and if so do you get an IP address.

Hi Winston!

Yes the IP address is set to DHCP, I played around switching ports until I hit the jackpot just now! it works! let's hope it is going to continue to work and not give me anymore problems, I can see the router address changed as well for the correct one once I switched ports.

I'm assuming your previous IP address started with 169 then, this isn't a proper address, it's a self assigned address that indicates a problem.

Well I don't know what is going on, but this is not working once again. It worked for a few hours, now it says "Internet Connection Failed" and absolutely nothing appears on the main screen, no apple movies, no netflix, nothing, I cannot get it to work again, I tried unplugging the router, the connection, changing ports, I am getting frustrated 😟

And yes the IP address starts with 169....how do I fix it? any help?
