Q: Problems accessing iTunes Library

I am trying to access my iTunes library from within FCP X using the Music and Sounds browser.  After I select iTunes from the fly-out menu "Open iTunes to populate this list" appears in the browser window.  Even after I open iTunes, none of my songs appear in the window.  Anyone else seeing this?

Thanks,

Peter

no, can't say i've seen that happen. I'm on Snow Leopard; maybe this is a Lion compatibility issue?

Are you on Lion as well?

Here's a couple of things to try- please let us know if these help:

    1. Check other iApps- like iPhoto, Aperture or TextEdit Open side bar panel to see if iTunes displays. If it's not showing there then the issue is not solely FCP X.

    2. If iTunes does not display in other apps, sometimes an XML refresh and App relaunch will force it to recognize the library.  Example: In iTunes, rename a song to force XML update.  Quit iTunes and FCP and relaunch each.

iTunes library doesn't show up for me in any iApp - I tried as you suggested, to no avail.  Seems like a Lion bug to me.  I've reported it to Apple.

Does iTunes open? Does it work?

This is not a Lion bug unless it is machine and configuration specific. I've tried Lion on a number of different machines and iTunes works as expected with FCP.

iTunes opens and works normally, however, when I try to access the the iTunes library from within FCP X, iMovie, or GarageBand, within the app's browser it says "Open iTunes to populate this list", which I do but nothing happens.

Is your iTunes library located in a non-standard place?

Can you drag songs directly from the open iTunes window into FCPX? That might be a possible work-around.

iTunes is in the default location.  Yes, I can drag songs directly from iTunes or import them so they show up in the Event Browser, so there are workarounds.  I would be nice if the program worked as intended, however.

The application does work as designed. There seems to be an anomaly on your system. Every other system I've seen as full access to iTunes. Clearly the issue is not in this application as it's endemic to others on your system.

Do you have sharing turned on in iTunes Preferences?

I was finally able to resolve this problem by reinstalling iLife '11.  Immediately after installing I had to do a software update to bring iPhoto up-to-date.  Can't guarantee this will work for everyone, but it worked for me.

Re-install of iLife '11 did not solve this problem for me.  I have also refreshed the iTunes XML file and the problem persists.  What else can I do to eliminate the message, "open iTunes to populate this list"?

This may be a better answer (if anyone reading this really doesn't want to have to reinstall iLife!)

This problem is typically from a defected or broken XML file in the Music library folder. In order to fix this, go to: ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.xml

Either delete this file (Move it the trash) or move it to the desktop. Either way, iTunes will have to recreate it. First, of course, QUIT iTUNES!

If an error occurs (which is likely, because it is a broken file) and you cannot move or delete it, try deleting it with the Terminal.

Be very careful not to delete the wrong file. The Terminal doesn't simply move the file to the trash, it DELETES IT. Here is what you need to do for this:

Open up a new Shell and type: rm -rf

Then, to eliminate confusion or accidents, just drag the file to the shell and the exact path will appear after it.

         Voila! It should be deleted.

Then, go ahead and open up iTunes. Rename a song or something and the iTunes Library will recreate the iTunes Library.xml file.

This works the same for just about any iLife application! If there is a problem accessing anything in the Media Browser, find the Library.xml file and delete it, then force the application to recreate a fresh, unbroken copy.

    Hope this helps!
