Unable to print on a network printer

Hi everyone,

Recently i have started facing an issue with my Macbook (13.3" early 2009 model running OS X10.7.1. ) while trying to print using a common netwrok printer.
The issue is that when i press the print button nothing quite happens, i check the print que of the printer and see that the job has not been created.

I deleted and re-added the printer but the issue still persists, on openening up the CUPS error_log file and see the following message :

"[30/Aug/2011:14:19:20 +0800] Returning IPP client-error-bad-request for CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer (ipp://localhost/printers/pstsc) from localhost"

The printer that i am trying to use is a "Lexmark T 642". Can some one please advise me on what to do?

Regards,
Ashish

I have been advised by my technical services to select the printer type as "Windows printer via spoolss", i ahve been using the same setting for the last one year (on snow leoperd previuosly) ... and i dont quite see the menu that lets me select the protocol... what do you mean by "default"?

thanks.. i checked the protocol tab... now i have a bit of a complication here. I add the printer using the advanced tab...where i put in the settings given to me by my technical services team i have attached a screen shot of them...

User uploaded file

when i click on the IP tab i see that the protocol is "Line Printer Daemon - LPD" but then when i go back to the Advanced tab i see all the information that i had filled in is lost. So i really dont know what protocol is selected when i choose the configuration as shown above.

Based on the screen grab your IT wants you to use Windows SMB to connect to the shared printer. As to why they needed to do this via the Advanced tab is confusing, as there is nothing in the queue syntax that would require this method, as the Windows tab provided in the Add Printer browser would achieve the same result.

As for losing the settings, since you are already in the Advanced Add Printer pane, by then selecting the IP > LPD pane you will lose the settings that you have just entered into Advanced pane.

Note that with what they have supplied you, there may be an issue with authentication to the Windows server. Normally when you use the Windows tab to add the printer and browse through the workgroup/domain and then select the server sharing the printer, you get prompted to authenticate. This requires you to enter a Windows user name and password. The same thing would have happened in 10.6. But with Lion it now seems that you don't need to add the domain name prefix to the Windows user name. Doing so causes an connection error.

Yes thats correct previously in 10.6 i was prompted to authenitcate with my username and password registered on the Domain in the form of DOMAINNAME/USERNSME. i had saved these on keychain access. I tried changing the user name by removing the domain name and tried printing again. however it still failed to print.

Would you be able to open the print queue for this printer and then select Printer > Log & History. This will open the Console application and the entry 'cups > error log' should be highlighted. This log shows your print activity and the failed job to the Windows share may show somthing similar to the following;

[Job 21] Failed to connect to "smb://<username>:<password>@computer_name/": STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER

[Job 21] Set job-printer-state-message to "Unable to connect to server", current level=ERROR

If you can locate the failed print job (as shown above the print job is surrounded by square brackets) and post the data back here it will with determining the cause of your problem.

i tried to print a new job just now...and the issue still persists.. however i dont see any new messages on the error log file... the last one i see is the one i saw before:

E [31/Aug/2011:01:40:26 +0800] Returning IPP client-error-bad-request for CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer (ipp://localhost/printers/psts) from localhost

However the access log shows a new message:

localhost - - [02/Sep/2011:17:13:46 +0800] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 890695 CUPS-Get-PPDs -

i have tired to remove the domain name prefix from the windows user name name in the keychain access record, i checked with my technical services team and they are unaware of what protocol must be used.

@PAHU thanks a lot for your help, i appologise for the delay in response.
