can't get latest version for iPhone 3G

4.2.1 IS the latest version for the 3G. The 3GS and 4 (GSM) can go up to 4.3.5 currently. The 3GS and 4 will get iOS 5 when it is released in the fall. The 3G has likely seen its last update.

Sorry but Apple has decided to cut off iPhone 3G users completly. Just like they cut of iPhone 2G users last year when iOS 4 was introduced. The iPhone 3G doesn't have the processer or RAM to support iOS 4.3.x and the upcoming iOS 5 this Fall. (iPhone 3G: 412 mHz processer/128 MB Ram vs iPhone 3GS: 600 mHz processer/ 256MB RAM vs iPhone 4: 1 GHz processer/512 MB RAM)

Apple has a life cycle for the iPhone that consists of a 2 year life span. (but that has stopped with the iPhone 3GS because it has gone slightly over the 2 year mark) And with each new iPhone, the RAM is doubled and the processer is increased. Expect Apple to include Apple's new A5 processer and 1 GB in the next iPhone.

No, it really is not sad. It simply is what it is. The 3G is over 3yrs old at this point (since initial release) and is no longer supported by Apple. Products do not live forever. If you want/need the latest/greatest features, then update to current hardware.

What security flaws? There are NO security flaws with 4.2.1. Do you have any evidence to support your statement that 4.2.1 has security flaws?

That is NOT a security flaw. The idea that is was was overblown hype by irresponsible bloggers and the news media. The details were fully explained. All the supposed "fix" involved was a setting to not back up the file that contained prefetched locations for nearby cell towers.

And the fact that it is able to be Jailbroken. Duh, that means there are security flaws to be able to do this.

And this is different from 4.3.5 how? or the beta of 5.0 (according to the blogosphere at any rate) for that matter?

NOTHING is 100% secure. If you're that concerned about it, I'd move to a cabin in the woods... off the grid, and switch to a manual typewriter. I don't believe they can be hacked.

Microsoft does NOT provide updates for their old mobile hardware In fact most companies do not provide updates for old mobile hardware. Seems like you may be confusing iOS with Windows (desktop OS).

I was talking about desktops. If only Apple was kind enough to help their customers out instead of screwing us over.

How is Apple "screwing" you over? The iPhone 3G is a 3 year old piece of hardware. Ancient by technology standards.

P.S.--I now see you were talking about desktops. My bad. Although I will say that I have an almost five year old iMac that is running Lion perfectly.

Well, that is just silly. iOS is not a desktop operating system so it should not be compaired to a desktop operating system.

Let's compare it to other mobile OSes. When was the last time Microsoft released an update for Windows Mobile... well over a year ago. Many of the original Android devices are stuck at 1.x because the hardware is not capable of running the newer versions.

If you do not want to look like a fool, do not make foolish statements.

Apple does more than most mobile OS vendors by releasing updates for approximately 2yrs after a device is released.
