I had this problem with my iPhone 4 and Windows XP. I tried everything and then some. Gee, only uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes about 100 times and it neverworked. Was on the phone with Apple Support for another hour, only to have them suggest exactly what I had already done. Today, I went back to internet for solutions. I tried many things today and most didn't work.

This one thing did:

Quit iTunes.

From the Control Panel, select Admin Tools, then select Services.

Click on Apple Mobile Device. On left side of box click on "Stop the Service". After it completes this task then click on "Start the Service".

Restart iTunes and connect the device.

Now, I was able to connect my device (a success sortof), but the first attempt at syncing failed. I simply (stubbornly) unplugged the phone and reconnected it. This time the sync went fine.

Joyous day!!
