Connecting a 13" Macbook Air to an HP w2338h monitor

I am a recent convert to the Mac world. I love the new Macbook Air and the built in screen has great resolution. Yet when I connect it to an external monitor - I tried both HDMI and VGA, the image on the HP monitor is quite poor. It is nowhere close to being as sharp as my old Lenovo laptop would generate on the same monitor. I set it to 1920x1080 on the HP using the display option under system preferences. It appears to accept it but it will sometimes tell me that only a lower resolution is usable. How can I sharpen the images/text onthe HP?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Grant. After lots of trial and error, I figured it out. I was mirroring the displays which seemed to reduce the resolution on the external display to a lower resolution. When I switched to "extend" the display, that fixed the problem. Somehow it seems that when the displays are being mirrored, the MB Air finds a low common factor, but is able to offer two different resolutions when I use the extend option.

I really appreciate your help.

thanks.
