Where is my user icon / photo stored?

Hi there -

Checked the old library>Cache>etc. but nothing there. I had a user profile shot that I'd like to recover & like to use elsewhere, but cannot locate it for the life of me.

In OS X Sierra, here's the path I found to my contact icons:

~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources/8369F5A3-0107-4DCE-B72D-70FB1E900808/Images/

So:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources/
  • In that "Sources" folder I found one more folder titled with a set of five alphanumeric strings separated by hyphens, "8369F5A3-0107-4DCE-B72D-70FB1E900808" (if you follow this path, you might find a different set of alphanumeric strings)
  • In that "8369F5A3-0107-4DCE-B72D-70FB1E900808" folder I found more items including an "Images" folder.
  • In that "Images" folder I found more items titled with alphanumeric string sets, some of which end in ".jpeg".
  • When I select one of those items and preview it by hitting the space bar, and scroll with the arrow keys, I find that all of the items are image files.

I copied the "Images" folder to my desktop, and added the ".jpg" suffix to some of the items that didn't have suffixes, and they became image files with picture icons.

I just recently upgraded to Yosemite and when I re-logged in, my beloved default picture had turned into a default pink flower. I've looked all over google and multiple threads and can't figure out where the picture is! I haven't found anything recently about people upgrading to Yosemite and having this issue. Any updates? I seriously can not find this picture anywhere. Please help!

Hi Captfred -

There is a photo of me in there - but it is from my last computer & was not my last user icon / photo. Perhaps though, if I do a time machine restore of that folder to a few weeks back, it will have the correct image.

I'm still certain that the photo must be somewhere on my mac, because I did not delete it (someone bumped me while I was working in sys. pref. & I tapped a different icon) - at this point it has just become a point of curiosity!

Thank you for taking the time to help & keep me posted if you learn of anything else. I'll be sure to post anything I find here as well.

All the best,

Rax

I believe that if you have changed the photo and only an old one exists, that you may not be able to get it back. Test this. Create a new image, set it as the icon, and check that it has appeared in the address book location. Then alter the icon through prefs to another image and the address book item should change. (rather than an extra image appear).

I think that makes sense, hate typing on an ipad!

.. normally it would be in iPhoto library. However, if you selected one randomly off your desktop or a folder then it could be anywhere on your computer. If you remember the name of it you can search for it through Spotlight. Did you look in the Pictures folder. When you opneed up the Users & Groups preference, did you click on the "Recent Pictures" pull-down menu?
