I recently switched to Comcast. The ougoing mail for my new comcast accounts goies on and offline constantly all the time. It doesn't happen for my .mac account. I've tried changing the port to 465 or 587 but that doesn't make any difference. any ideas?

I have the same problem. I've had this problem on my iMac SINCE upgrading to Lion. When I awake the iMac from sleep, for about 20 seconds I am unable to load Safari (message says internet connection failed) or to connect to my ISP's mail servers. Anyone found a workable solution? And, Joe, I am indeed using your settings.
I believe that 995 is the port for incoming mail. My problem is with outgoing mail.
You will need to call Comcast and ask them exactly what settings they require; I've had multiple problems with them which were finally resolved when he told me to start using port 25 (but mentioned that that is not available everywhere and/or not widely used or something like that). I used to have to delete the Mail .plist and set up Mail again and again to the point that I made screenshots of all settings windows so I could just copy them if needed. Here is a screenshot of my outgoing (smtp) settings:
Again, this was at the direction of Comcast tech support. I believe they also now have a web page with instructions for Mac.
Your right. I use Custom Port 587. You could try that and force Mail use 587 and not 25 or 465
Obviously if babowa and I have different outgoing port numbers that work for us, you'll have to contact Comcast to get the correct number. Or go to the Comcast website and look through Apple Mail Support. But it may not be a port number issue either.
Just being curious, do you have time machine running? I had this problem myself with my e mail going off line, and my I mac not waking up ever since I upgraded to Lion. I earased my TC hard drivr and started over. It sloved all my problems.
How do you have the Outgoing Mail Server set up. This is my setup. Comcast works best if you use only them as the Outgoing Mail Server.
It probably has something to do with their equipment/servers/locations - we are on opposite sides of the country!
Joe, I do have my outgoing settings like yours but I also have Time Machine running. Perhaps that is part of the problem.
I have Time Machine running also. Not sure how Time Machine would have anything to do with it.
You're right. It's also happening on my laptop and that doesn't run Time Machine.
Joe, I cannot seem to find where in Mail you set your Outgoing SMTP port? Where was your screenshot taken?
I'm using Lion Mail so this may be different on your System.
Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Select your Comcast Account in the Sidebar/Account information/Outgoing Mail Server(SMTP): Use the drop down menu/Edit SMTP Server List/Advanced
I have tried every permuation of outgoing mail settings and found that setting the outgoing port to 25 without SSL checked is what seems to work for me. Neither 587 nor 465 works. Thank you all for yor suggestions.
