Feb 25, 2014 9:59 AM in response to dale275by alrimbaud,Add me to the list. 27inch iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, left side flickering and waiting to go out completely. Purchased through applestore with Barclay card...still paying it off. 120 days after warrenty and Genius bar said they couldn't help me. Offered to wave labor and charge $500. I refused. The funny thing is that i tried showing them the posts about the 2009 imac that expieirenced the same problems...didn't read this thread till i got home. So i guess 2009 -2011 27" iMacs are having this problem. 3 years worth of computers with the same screen glitch and they still refuse to admit its a factory defect. Apple needs to recall these and fix the $10 plug that appears to be the problem.

Feb 25, 2014 11:34 AM in response to alrimbaudby YvonnePhoto,Another one to add to the list, mid-2011 machine bought in mid 2012 [and still under Applecare] has just started doing it this evening. Woke it from sleep and a few minutes later screen brightness dropped, which I found odd because I have the auto-brightness thing turned off. I was running a program that has a dark background, when I minimised it, I realised that actually, it was only the left side of the screen that had dimmed. Put it back into sleep mode, left it a few monents, woke again and screen back to normal, for a few more minutes, and then dimmed on left again. It is now dim, but once or twice has flickered briefly back to bright. I guess I better book an appointment with the Geniuses... just what I need, lugging 27 inches of mac through a shopping centre. NOT HAPPY!! Especially if they have known about this issue for this long.

Feb 25, 2014 11:46 AM in response to YvonnePhotoby TequilaGrover,Yes, that's exactly how mine started. It will get progressively worse, until the entire left side is too dark to even see anything clearly.
I finally brought mine to the Genius Bar in San Francisco, and I was given a blank stare look as I described the problem, and even included a link to this message thread. No sympathy at all. I was told it would cost over $500 to replace the screen. The other option, I was told, was to buy a new computer. Nice.
I asked, "If I pay $500 to fix this now, will it happen again in a year?"
More blank stares.
I wish they would have looked at this message thread so they could at least fake some sympathy.
When I get the final repair receipt, I am going to post it on every social media site I belong to and warn everyone not to buy one of these 27 inch iMacs.

Niote, that since it's covered under AppleCare and if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for an onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located). Available in the US, for sure.

Mar 6, 2014 7:18 PM in response to dale275by Amy Hudson,Me too....27" iMac. LCD screen replaced once during warranty period. Now 1.5 years later, the second LCD flickers on and off, then goes dark on the left side. Can't afford a repair.

The Apple store said they had never heard of this problem...BS! What a joke!

May 8, 2014 12:49 PM in response to dale275by RamboMonkey,Same here iMac 27" Mid 2011 Intel Core i5 2.7 GHz in the UK, I have had the unit since November 2011 and I have noticed the problem has got worse over the last year. I refuse to pay for a repair due to this been a manufacturing/design fault IMO.
It started with the top left corner of the display going darker than the right hand side, over time it has got to nearly 50% of the screen being dark (left hand side).
This is my first iMac and I can say I loved it but to me this is pathetic compared to my Windows machine thats been running since 2007 without ANY issues what so ever!!!
I truly hope Apple do something about this, surley with all the stuff on the Internet regarding this they must accept liability for this rubish.
Apple come on admit that you also have a problem with the i5 generation running the Radeon 6770M graphics card!!!!
OVER TO YOU APPLE.
ONE NOT VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER!!!

May 11, 2014 12:40 PM in response to dale275by I'm Matt,Put me on the list. IMac, mid 2011, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB. Darkened lower 1/3 on the left hand side of the screen.

May 22, 2014 11:14 AM in response to dale275by DanAziz,Add me to this list too - iMac 27inch bought May 2011, 2.7GHz Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770< 512Mb.
The brightness on my screen has been flickering for a while now and sometimes the screen would just go black. It has now started to randomly go dark on the left side. It seems that the left side of the computer gets too hot and the screen starts misbehaving...
I've rang my local Apple store and explained that this forum has a whole LOAD of people on with the same issue with iMacs purchased mid-2011, so I can't understand for the life of me how this is not a known problem by APPLE!!! If we are prepared to pay over £1300 for a computer, we'd bloody expect it to work for more than 3 years please... I have been told that if I pay to get it fixed, and they do realise that this is a known problem, they will reimburse the cost of the repair, however I really can't see why I should have to pay for something which is a technical failure on the manufacturers part and something that is affecting many other people!!
For the moment I think I will buy a non Apple monitor and screen share my iMac, which is a rediculous thing to have to do to a computer which is only just 3 years old and cost nearly £1400 to buy!!
Apple please read and respond...
