HP C4780 printer goes into scan mode on its own

My HP C4780 keeps going into scan mode running Lion. I did not have this problem with previous OS Snow leopard. What Should I do?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.1)

Although I set Print on Printer/system preferences, I keep getting a display on the printer that says "Scan/Photo Copy," then it on its own goes to "Memory Card/Photo/Passport photo" and then to "Place photo original face down on glass," all on its own. I am not using the wireless feature, the printer is cabled into my imac.

How do I "totally uninstall and then reinstall?"

Let's backup a couple of steps. I'm not really getting what you mean when you say; Although I set Print on Printer/system preferences, I keep getting a display on the printer that says "Scan/Photo Copy," then it on its own goes to "Memory Card/Photo/Passport photo" and then to "Place photo original face down on glass," all on its own."

So the issue is on the printer's screen not on the computer?

The printer has a little screen that describes its status. What I described is what I see on the little screen. I think it is some sort of system problem because it has become difficult to print documents.

I have turned the printer on and off, the problem persists. I have shut down and restarted my computer, the probem persists. When I can get it to actually print, it does so well.

Well that doesn't have anything to do with OS X. If this changed when you installed Lion that is a coincidence. Check in the owners manual to see if it has some kind of reset ability. Many printers have a keystroke sequence built into the printer that resets it. If you can't find it in the manual a call to HP or an online chat with them is probably in order.

However to answer your earlier question of how to uninstall and re-install. Here is the sequence I'd recommend:

1. In Print & Scan Preference highlight the printer on the left then click the - symbol below it. Then physcially disconnect the printer from the computer and switch the printer off.

2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, this will clear some of the caches. Then restart normally.

3. Then turn on the printer and re-connect it via USB to the iMac. Double check in the Print & Scan Preference and it should be seen at that point.

I uninstalled and reinstalled as you advised me to do; my printer screen still gets stuck on scan and then cycles into scan instructions. What I don't understand is why this problem started when I installed Lion.

This printer has wireless capability, although I don't use it. There are wireless devices close by--micro cell, land line portable phone--could these now in some way be influencing the printer?

These were not an issue in the past--everything worked well as long as I was running Snow Leopard.

Lion (or any OS for that matter) cannot tell your printer to display messages on the printer. What has occured was simply a coincidence when you installed Lion. If you can locate a master reset on the printer that may get rid of the problem or it may even be more simple than that. Just look on the printer's menus to see what it displays.

Never download drivers or install HP software on your Mac. If it's still not working you can always totally uninstall and then reinstall.

I'm not sure where this advice is coming from. I have this and the C4680 AIOs and have installed the appropriate HP software for both on different iMacs, followed by the HP Updates, the 2.7.2 to be exact w/o issues. Both printers work, although the C4780 on my mate's machine hasn't seen the likes of Lion; whereas the C4680 has and it had no issues whilst beta-teating it for five months.
