iMac Emergency!

My iMac (2nd Gen) will not go beyond the white screen on startup . The white screen displays a folder icon in the middle of the screen with a flashing question mark. I have rebooted and held the start button to hear the long beep but it doesn't help.

May mean a failed Hard Drive or the startup disk can't be found.

See if it will boot holding down the option key. This may bring you to a screen where you can select the normal boot volume to start up from. If not, it's probably a failed drive.

Also try starting up in Safe Mode. Hold down the shift key at the startup chime. Will take much longer than a normal boot as it will be checking and trying, if possible and if necessary, to repair the drive.
