Problem with iPhone mail set up.

My husband had to replace his iPhone 4 due to technical problems. Our ISP at home is Comcast, using a Linksys router. When we upgraded routers about two months ago, we had to change the pass phrase from the old 32-character identifier to a new pass phrase. My iPhone, which operates perfectly on our home network, does not appear to be using the new pass phrase as it has one more character than the new phrase. My husband has tried to set up his phone using the new phrase, as appearing on the Linkys info page 192.168.1.1, yet the phone will not verify and establish the account for him. We obviously could change the pass word and both use the new one, but I'm somewhat reticent in that mine appears to be working beautifully on something different from the pass phrase and I would hate to lose my primary email.

Does anyone know of a way to force your password to 'reveal' itself? All I need to do is see what I am using in my settings so that my husband can use the same pass word or phrase. My iMac also runs off the same network, so if there is a way to see the pass phrase that it is using in system settings, I'd appreciate advice on that, as well. Thanks for your input.

If you replaced your Linksys router and changed the pass phrase on the new router, there is no way the WiFi on your phone would be working if you didn't change the passcode in your phone. The same with the iMac. I would have to say that you didn't save the new passphrase.

When your husband looks for you home WiFi, does it appear with the lock, as if it was a secure wireless network? Maybe you don't have a secure network right now. Try rebooting the router and see what happens. Then try establishing a new passcode and try and connect the devices then.

There are some programs on the Internet that will allow you to view some passwords where all you can see is dots or astericks. Try and Google something for that.

As I just sent my reply, I looked at your Subject and now I'm not sure I answered your question correctly. You are not having trouble with the WiFi, you are having a mail account problem? Is that correct? If that is what it is, the answer could be different. I'll wait to hear back to see what it is exactly you are looking for.

You can log in to the Linksys console to find out what the passcode is. Note that many apps do not display the same number of asterisks as there are characters in the passcode, as knowing the passcode length could greatly simplify the work of a hacker.

However, what confuses me is you talk about iPhone mail setup, but then ask about WiFi. The two have nothing to do with each other.

Chris,

Thanks for the quick reply. I clearly changed the passcode in my iPhone and must have in my Mac. They are both running off our private secure network (appears with the lock), so I must have saved the new passphrase. Can't think how it would work otherwise.

I have logged into the Linkysys console and confirmed the passcode. Problem is that when we enter this my husband's new iiPhone, it just doesn't work. Comes back with a message that either the account or password is in error. I've checked the spelling on his account name, compared all setup data to my phone, and the only difference is the password, which I can't see.

So, my problem is both mail on the iPhone and WiFi because my husband's phone won't switch over when he enters the house, as it should from 4G. Do you know of any of these programs that will allow you to "reveal" your actual pass phrases/words for an application? I didn't realize that the characters might be of different lengths than the passwords themselves, which makes sense. However, it doesn't explain why mine would work and my husband's would not. I tried going into the Linsys console through my iPhone hoping that it would reveal what password I was using and it gave me the one for the network -- same one that will not verify on my husband's new phone. Could anything else be interfering? I've gotten his other mail accounts set up, but Comcast (being our ISP and his primary email account) is by far the most important and just not cooperating?

Thanks,

MamaGianna

You are looking at two different things here. His inability to join the wireless network is one, and the inability to get into his email is something different. Those are two separate issues. First you need to see about him joining the wireless network at home. Once he is able to do that, then you can match the email settings from your iPhone into his email account. The only difference being his username and password. If he can check his mail using Comcast's web access, then you know the username and password. If he is not the primary account, you can change his password via access to Comcast on the computer.

I would just delete the mail account and first worry about joining the wifi network. Once that is accomplished, then tackle the email.
