When I try to start up my macbook, the screen displays a blinking apple, then null sign(or universal sign for "no") in the center of the screen.
What does this mean, and how can I fix the problem.

Sounds like hard drive failure.
Insert the install disk and hold down the c key on startup. Choose your language then continue until you see the menubar. Select Utilities > Disk Utility. Now select your hard drive and click verify (this will check for errors) then click repair. Post back any errors that it displayed.
