Missing EXS24 instrumens after upgrading to logic pro 9.

Hi there.

I have recently upgraded from logic express 9 to logic pro 9. When I opened the project I was working on, I got a message that some EXS24 instruments were not found. I have done all the necessary upgrades after installing LP9, reinstalled the disks multiple times but the instruments are not to be found. I search in my finder and they just seem to be missing from the HD. I have seen multiple discussion on the net about similar problems, but they mostly involved new installation of the LP, not upgrading. And there are many sugestions about what to do, but all of them differ. How should I solv this problem?

Thanks.

When you load a project that has missing samples, write down or copy one of the missing sample names exactly as it's shown to you in the dialog.

Search your hard drive for that name.

There's a possibility the some of the samples were moved to folder for unused or old samples.

Also, post the name here, maybe someone can tell you what version of Logic or Garageband it originated from.

I among many others had a similar problem. I forget who came up with the solution but it worked for most of us.

I will try and explain from what I remember - Apparently - Garageband and Logic share the same library in some parts - somewhere along the line - Including EXS - There was some 'conflict' when loading Logic that by error - wiped out some of the EXS stuff - That made Garagebands Hybrid Instruments vanish - both Hybrid Morphs and Hybrid Basics - Hence, some of the EXS instruments relative to both Logic and Garageband which rely on the same EXS stuff - no longer worked.

The solution was as follows - One needs to get the Install Discs which contain Garageband

Then use Pacifist to isolate the files that you need from Garageband and reinstall just those files

That avoids a complete re-install which can cause more problems and hassles as well as taking much less time.

Pacifist if you have never used it before looks a little scary at first glance but don't be intimidated by it if it's your first time using it. The app includes guidance as you transfer files and the latest update even compares the files you have with the install discs so it will select just the files you want to restore and not duplicate files that are still in place.

I hope that method helps out and you get all the EXS instruments working again. The problem you are having may not be the same as many others have had but it may well be.

Before you start on that solution - Open up Garageband and see if all your Hybrid Morphs and Hybrid Basics have either vanished or are corrupted - that should signify you have the same problem others have had.

Hi again.

The Hybrid Morphs and Hybrid Basics (or at least some of them, I don´t know how many there are supposed to be) are to be found in LP-Garageband instruments, but are gone missing in Garageband itself. So basically, what you are suggesting is taking the LP9 installation disc that contains Garageband and apply Pacifist to find the missing instruments? My question is, if the instruments are on the installation disc, why aren´t they being installed??

The EXS24 instruments I was using on my last project that are gone missing are:

- "Mini C dark.exs"

- "Mini Softstrings.exs"

- "Silvertone.exs"

I am sure there are more, ´cause I haven´t checked my other projects yet, where I also use EXS24 instruments.

Ok, now I have downloaded Pacifist and applied it on the LP9 installation disc that contains both Logic and Garageband instrument samples. From what I can see the instruments that I have lost are not there. It looks like the installation of LP9 has been succesful. So why have I lost so many EXS instruments? This is a mystery to me. Does it have anything to do with me upgrading from LE9 (where I was using all the now lost samples), meaning that it was not a clean installation of LP9 but an upgrade? And if so, why did this happen and how can I restore the files?

Ok two things..

Did you follow my instructions and do a search for one of the missing files (Spotlight search or better yet, download EZFind and use that). The installation takes old files and moves them to an unused folder sometimes with "old' in the name. At least give this a try

The instruments you are looking for are NOT part of the new installation, as you've found out, they were from a previous GB or Logic installation.

No, not the Logic Installation Discs. Leave the Logic Install Discs alone now - Forget about them

You need to find your O.S Install Discs. The Garageband Application is usually on the Operating System Install Discs as an included Application.

Get those discs, but DO NOT run the Intallation.

1. First Download Pacifist

2. Use Pacifist to open the Intall Discs and locate the Garageband Files.

3. Then find the Folders - Hybrid Basic and Hybrid Morphs

Those are the files that you need to re-install to make both Garageband and Logic Instruments complete again.

.pst files should be found in

Hard Disc/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Plug-In Settings/Hybrid Basic

and

Hard Disc/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Plug-In Settings/Hybrid Morph

Take a look on your Hard Disc and see if they are there at the moment.

If not, locate them with Pacifist and restore the folder with the .pst files

Sampler Files may have also been messed up. Drum Kits tended to vanish for many people. So check Garageband and see if your Drum Kits still play - if the files are missing - all MIDI notes will just sound a nasty pitch noise that will give you a headache : ) HipHop Kit and Dance Kit vanished for most people.

example

Hard Disc/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/Dance Kit

That's where the .aif Files should be - If they are not there, restore those folders

Also check for the .exs Files in their Folders . . . example

Hard Disc/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Instruments/Hybrid Basic

and

Hard Disc/Library/Application Support/Garageband/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Instruments/Hybrid Morph

That's the essence of what you need to do. It's a lot of cross referencing but if you want Logic and GB to play as it should . . . it has to be done.

Ok, I´ve checked on my HD and the Hybrid Basic and Hybrid Morph instruments are there, so that´s good. The drum kits are there as well. What I am guessing after all this is that I have to check the Logic Express 9 installation disc and see if the missing files are there, for that´s what I upgraded to LP9 from. I will let you know once I´ve tried that.

Thanks for all the help till now!

Actually, all you have to do is move them back to their original location. You don't need disks.. you don't need pacifist, the installation has simply moved them out of the original location, if you re-install you will double them and be using unnecessary disk space.

You are making a simple problem much more difficult than it need be.

Ok guys, problem solved!!! I used pacifist to extract the missing files from the LE9 installation disc. That´s where the missing instruments were found. When I updated to LP9 they didn´t come along for some reason. All the legacy instruments were missing as well, I got them back too.

Life is good! Thanks a lot for great help

Elias . . . I am stepping out of this one now - sorry - I have done all I can now. Since you are using Logic 9 Pan may have more of an idea. My experience was with Logic 8 and that just destroyed the existing library when installing, it just wrote over and replaced all the folders. Your troubles seemed familiar and the solution I offered restored files that Logic destroyed - those being from pre-exisitng software installations, shared by Garageband and Logic and originally installed by OS Disc 2.

If Pan has knowledge of Logic 9 merely moving those pre-existing files and folders, as opposed to deleting them, he may well be right.

Since I have Logic 8, Garageband 3 and 8, Absynth 5, Battery 3, FM8, Kontakt 4, Massive, Reaktor 5, Blue, East West Play, Omnisphere, Waveburner, Photoshop, illustrator, Flash Pro, Flash Catalyst, Dreamweaver, Fireworks - email and browsers + MIDI Keyboard and External Audio Devices all working well together in Snow Leopard, I have avoided Lion and Logic 9 as it causes more problems than it solves it seems. According to these forums, just about everything I have will fail if I move to Lion.

Since there's so many issues with Lion and Logic that I can not help with - others are in a better position to offer more accurate advice than I can - so I shall let Pan take care of you and step aside . . . hope you get some results soon Elias

I don´t understand what you mean. The reason that I want to check the LE installation disc is that the files that I am missing don´t seem to be anywhere on my HD.

Ok,

When you wrote this:

"Ok, I´ve checked on my HD and the Hybrid Basic and Hybrid Morph instruments are there, so that´s good. The drum kits are there as well."

It sounded like you had found your missing files on the drive.

At least you've got them back now, good work.

Glad you got it sorted it out Elias. It does not matter how you get there, as long as you get there. Seems like a similar thing to that which many of us had experienced with Logic 8 but in your case the L.E Installation Instruments got written over as opposed to G.B Installation Instruments. My mistake there - so sorry to lead you astray like that.

You got it all working again now anyway and every forum user loves it when things get fixed so we can all smile now.
