Ram: OS X vs. Windows

Windows laptops allow to you put in 16 GB of Ram, while MacBook Pros are maxed out at 8 GB. The reason may be that OS X handles Ram more efficiently. OK...but what if you have to run Windows on your Mac via Parallels and your Windows software is a Ram hog? How do you compensate for that?

Possible answer: Mac simply cannot run such an application, buy a PC?

I don't know how you determined that Windows laptops allow you to put in 16GB of RAM. The amount of RAM that can be installed on a Windows, or any other laptop, is determined by the architecture of the computer. There are many Windows laptops that only allow 4GB or 6GB, or 8GB of RAM due to hardware architecture design and price considerations. What Windows application do you want to run that won't run well using 8GB of RAM on your MBP?

2011 motherboards use Sandy Bridge socket and do support 16GB RAM.

Checked Crucial web site. Also www.macsales.com/memory/macbookpro

Usually you can exceed with proper memory, not just off the shelf PC RAM, what Apple publishes, but first did you look at Apple MBP specs. 2 x 8GB will set you back $900 though. Laptops probably don't have 4 DIMMs, making the iMac an easier plus cheaper configuration.

MacBook Pro - follow the links to specs page
