How do I display my iPad on my TV?

So I have a first gen iPad and I bought a VGA connector for the iPad but when I connect it the only thing that will display is a movie for a few seconds and the a message shows up on the iPad that says that my device has not been approved to display protected movies. What am I not doing to be able to display movies as well as other things?

I believe you mean HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Copy Protection) not DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) which is for IP networks and not TV or video.

HDCP is only available on a digital connection like HDMI (High Definition Mulitmedia Interface) so you'd need the HDMI iPad adapter rather than the VGA adapter. However I do not know for certain if the HDMI iPad adapter will play back HDCP content. Dahveed is correct in that you will also need a HDCP compatible TV in order to get this to work.
