Yes.

Really? Then why won't it work? My 160GB Classic absolutely will not take a charge with my iPad's charger. My iPhone 4s will, as will my iPod touch, but the Classic absolutely will not. Haven't tried my 3rd gen Nano only because I mothballed it ages ago, but I will look for it and give it a test charge with the 10w ipad charger and update this response.
Is your iPad charger, dock cables from Apple or 3rd Party?
The newer iPod has a protection circuit, monitoring the voltages on the D+ and D- pins, so that it draws max 1Amp current from any charger, as there will be iPod owners who want a quick charge and thereby fried their iPod.
B-Rock is correct, in that, you can, however, use the Apple iPad charger via the Apple Universal Dock, to charge the iPod. You must use the genuine Apple Dock connector cable.
If yourcharger is not working bring it in to Apple Store.
Have a nice Day.
All of my chargers are OEM from Apple. If I am reading your post correctly, Bilbo, the iPod should definitely accept the charge from the iPad's 10w charger; but I assure you it does not. Funny thing, though: when I connect the iPod to the 10w, it does recognize that it has been connected to something. The screen will turn on from dormant, but the battery icon has no lightning bolt, and hours later, there will be no change in battery life. Ugh....Apple store on the weekend...last thing I wanted to do.
Sorry, There was an earlier version of the Apple 10W iPad Charger that can be used by iPod, but not the current model. See this article http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/apple-ipad-10w-usb-power-adapter/
The latest version of the Apple 10W charger, does not have the iPod is not in the compatible list.

I guess there was too many feedbacks, that the iPod safeguarding circuitry, is working too well, and shutting down the iPod charging circuit, whenever the 10W iPad charger is connected.
Yes I read it too, as B-Rock did, earlier in this Apple support Article,

The iPad USB Power Adapter is a 10W charger. While designed for use with the iPad, you can use the iPad 10W USB Power Adapter to charge all iPhone and iPod models by connecting them using a Dock Connector to USB cable.
So bring the Charger to Apple Store for a refund, or a charger that can charge both iPad and all iPods.
Have a nice day!
