Why doesn't my Java work?

I have the same problem in Safari Version 5.1 (7534.48.3) and FireFox. I have Java enabled in both browsers but if I use a Java tester on a website it tells me that Java is disabled. I just installed Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B26). Is there any way to download Java besides running the software update check? It doesn't find anything out of date and the Oracle website won't let me download Jave for my Mac because it says to use the software update check.

Is there a way to downgrade back to my Mac OS X Snow Leopard without losing everything?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.1), Java is broke!
