white screen on shutting down

white screen on shutting down

I have an i7 iMac and when i shut down the screen goes white with the spinning wheel in the middle and stays there, not completing the shut down procedure. This remains indefinitely. I have left it for hours and come back with it still like this. I then have to press the on/off button on the rear to properly shut down. I have installed Lion but it happened before this installation.

Any ideas?

Try resetting the PRAM. Shutdown, startup holding down Option-CMD-P-R together at the startup chime, wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.

I have a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.9.5), and I had the same problem. I uninstalled my antivirus software and installed Memory Clean (to clean my RAM). I clean my RAM right before shutdown. It never gets stuck on the white screen again.
