Upgraded to Lion and now Mail does not show attachments in the Send Box (for new messages only).

After upgrading to Lion and switching Mail to the classic mode, I can no longer see if messages have attachment in my Send Box. However, I can go into the message and see the attachment.

Strangely, all my messages prior to the upgrade show their attachments.

I've looked through the preferences and don't see a swith for this.

Any suggestions. Thanks.

I see the attachments.

Classic mode.

You cann see the Headers of the message in 2 ways. The standard way shows the "clip-Mark" after the name of the sender. If you switch to "Details" the Header expands, the "Clipmark" remains and in addition you have over the line dividing Header from Message text the Kb Dimensions of the attachment

Walter, thank you for the suggestion.

Perhaps I am not explainging myself very well.

In the Send Box new messages do not show the clip in the Attachments column. The image below is of two messaegs, both of which have an attachment, yet no clip is shown (this is also true of the Draft Box).

In all other boxes, an attachment is shown with a clip (see below).

I need the clips to be shown in all mail boxes.

Thanks.

Hi Blair,

I'm convinced that this behaviour is a bug. Mail.app 5.0 handles attachments slightly different and a lot more of win/outlook users cannot open mail.app-attachements since the lion-upgrade, because they are simply not "flagged" as attachements. Funny enough, this is only true for some mail-servers, whereas others (like googlemail) seem to "re-flag" the mail as "with attachement". So I have the following situation: in my send-box, ALL mails are unflagged for attachements. When I send them cc: to myself, they are flagged "with attachment" when sent via googlemail and "without attachment" when sent via any other server I use. I hope for a bug-fix soon!

Hi Jürgen,

Thanks for responding; I thought I was the only only one with this problem. It sounds like you have an additional problem when sending messages with attachments. I posted my problem to my local Mac User Group, and even though there is an Apple rep on the MUG, I have had no response.

I will start Cc'ing myself, although this seems like a very crude workaround. Thanks for the suggestion.

Is anyone at Apple viewing these posts? Hello...

The issue is a bit more complex. The Sent message looks quite normal if the Sent mailbox is accessed, say, in Mail 4.5, and has its paper clip, and all. Likewise, a message Sent from Mail 4.5, when seen in the Sent mailbox in Mail 5.x will look normal. It is very odd thing, and I have yet been able to get deep enough to know why.

The other issue mentioned about some Windows users not seeing the attachments is related to Mail 5.x not actually sending in Plain Text, even if you request it. I have been informed that has been done on purpose by Apple engineering, but I am of the opinion that change is a grave mistake, and will continue to be problematic. I continue to collect reports about that in the hopes I can ulitimately convince someone it is a bad change.

Just wanted to stop by to thank you for this workaround. This has been driving me crazy all year! The workaround works more or less. What I find strange, and rather disappointing, is that mail has colored many messages that do not have attachements and has failed to color some messages that do have attachments. This points to the fact that Mail in Lion is horribly inconsistent in applying rules. Mail used to be such a great application...

oakmontoz! Thank you. I revised it slightly to work a bit easier without changing messages color. This offers the same functionality with less impact on sent messages if people already had them color coded . See below :

1 - Create a rule in the Mail Preferences pane

2 - Call it "Get My Paperclip Icons Back!"

3 - Set conditions as below :

A - If ALL of the following conditions are met :

B - From Ends With [Your email address here] (you can do this for multiple too]

C - Any Attachment Name Contain "." [with the quotations around the dot]

Perform the following actions :

D - Mark as Read [which really makes no impact on how its viewed]

Click Ok. When message "Do you want to apply your rules to messages in selected mailboxes?" I chose "Dont Apply". [But you can click "Apply" if you are in the "Sent Folder"

Then go to your sent folder, Select your messages [recent/all], and right click "Apply Rules" or from the menu Message -> Apply Rules.

Voilla! Paperclip icons are back. Plus "Mark as Read" did no harm to your already colored/flagged sent emails.

Hope this helps!

Note : If you could make this rule apply automatically when you send mail, well... until Apple fixes this problem, this would be the seamless solution. Until then, you would have to do it manually.
