No you do not have to shut it off. I shut mine off once in a while but I usually put it on the pwer adapter and let it charge overnight. Just put it to sleep if you do not turn it off or if you are not charging it.

The only reason to ever turn off your iPad is if you are trying to conserve battery charge. It uses minimal power when not in use, although certain functions use more (if you've configured it to check email every hour, for example).

I switch off wifi at night (if it was a 3G version then I would switch that off) - other than I just put it into sleep mode. I only switch it off completely if I know that I won't be using it for a few days, so not very often.

There are plenty of times where shutting off the iPad is called for and does make sense. Restarting is a basic troubleshooting step. That does involve turning the iPad off. There is absolutely no reason why you cannot turn the device off as well. As I stated, I shut mine off every once in a while. If you are not going to be using it for a couple of days, why leave it turned on?
