I am getting ready to edit a documentary that will have about 20 hours of footage. It is in HD. I edit on 2.8 quadcore tower with FCP 7. In order to save money, would it be dumb to buy two internal hard drives instead of getting 2 G-Raid drives at a higher cost?

Not at all, but you really want to think in terms of doing both, so that should something happen and your internal media drives fail or become corrupted, you have a back up copy of all your files so you can resume editing without having to re-ingest all the material again.

I agree with Meg the Dog. It would not be stupid to buy 2 high end devices. For such a large project though make sure that you are constantly saving different versions to both hard drives in case of failure. Also make sure you have enough ram and are constantly restarting your computer so that your computer will be faster.
economy is not a factor here. Evaluate your investment to this point. Calculate the value of your future sales or distribution income. Now look at what will happen to those figures if your drives fail.
