Software Update won't load?

When the software update checks for updates, the blue loading bar won't move at all. After about 5 minutes of the blue bar just sitting there, it will come up saying "no network detected", even though my network is working fine. What do i do? I want to update iTunes and GarageBand, please help!
Ps I'm using a Mac OS X 10.6.8
