How clean is the air where that computer is used?
Any chance of dust-bunnie buildup? Smoking...pet dander, etc.
Be sure that there aren't too many objects crowded around it - don't risk impeding air flow.
That said, this is summer time, so ambient temps may be a factor.
Funny nobody mentions that the fan should be coming on!
I was surprised my 2006 iMac has one. It is variable speed, and rarely comes on. But it did one time in the 4 months I have owned it. So I guess it is temperature set.
Make sure your fan works!
Actually the fan is always on. The speed varies according to temperature of specific components.

I've had problems with temperatures and burning smells on a 27" iMac. I did some tests today, comparing Snow Leopard and Lion, and found some very surprising results that might explain the differences. I've posted information on my blog:

If you have similar problems, and can post information about your system in the comments, this will help me work with an Apple technician to try and figure out this problem.
