I've noticed something ever since I upgraded to Lion: many times when I make a change to a document (so far I've noticed this in Pages and Numbers mostly) that I've previously saved and just opened to edit, my computer beachballs for about 30 seconds or a minute. Any idea if this is an issue with versions? or Time Machine?

Probably versions, which uses the TM engine.
I get something that appears to be very similar with Numbers and Pages. When I use the Console utility to look at the log, I see a number of timeouts when the Versions software seem unable to find a file it is lookng for. An example is as follows -

I'm pretty sure that these are happening when the beachball is showing.
In some cases I get many more timeouts and the beachball is then visible for many more seconds.
Are you getting something similar?
Have just discovered that my problem which coincided with the timeout messages on the console log were being caused by Kaspersky Anti-virus for Mac. Disabling that resulted in the messages and the accompanying spinning beachball delays going away.
I was seeing thes problems in Pages, Numbers and TextEdit.
Have reported the issue to Kaspersky.

I too was having this issue so tried Bit Defender. Exactly the same thing happens, so in my book that's a serious flaw in Lion. Basically it looks like AV doesn't work with versions. Can't believe that it's that simple though otherwise one assumes everyone would be clamouring for a fix for this.
Anyone else seeing this as it's driving me nuts - I have to disable real time scanning whenever I use e.g. Xcode or Pages or any other app that uses document versions.......
