Q: How to re-download apps from App Store purchased from SL

Hi,

I have recently installed Lion on my second partition rather than upgrading my Snow Leopard. I'm using the same Apple ID to access Mac App Store and in the "Purchased" tab I saw all my old apps listed here, but some with "Install" button grayed out. These apps mostly does not present in the Lion installation but rather they are in my SL system. These apps are free (e.g. Evernote) but now I can not re-download them into my Lion system through the Mac App Store.

What could go wrong here?

Thanks!!

Open the Mac app store, and on the purchased tab, hold option and click the icon. Should refresh and show the install icon as clickable now.

Hi, I just tried this. When clicking on the Evernote link with Option key hold down, the button shows "Free" at the first time but before I'm able to click on it, it turns back to "Installed" and I could do nothing about it from there.

    Thanks, Ryan

Before you click the "purchases" button in the MAC toolbar hold down the Option key. Then you will be able to download your apps again.

    Michael,

Thanks for the tip! It worked for me once (so I have Evernote now, at least) but not anymore.

    I tried the following:

Launch "Mac App Store" from the Dock (with / without Option key down)

Click "Purchase" icon in the Mac toolbar with Option key down

    * At this point a partial list of software I have previously purchased is displayed, with "Install" button enabled on the right side of list, but not click-able - the interface is freezing at this stage

    * After the interface is recovered, most of the "Install" button turned into light gray "Installed" button which is not click-able

I then clicked on the Evennote link (with or without Option key down I can't exactly recall) and the "Free" button shows up so I am able to re-install that. But Later I tried all other packages but they all showed up with "Installed" on their dedicated pages so I still can't install them.

    What might be wrong?

    Thanks, Ryan

It is only necessary to hold down the Option key when you click the Purchases button. No other time is necessary. The first thing to do is to log out of the MAS account, then back in again. However, since you are doing this on an external HDD, the MAS is probably recognizing the previously installed Apps on the Mac's HDD and that may be what is interfering with the download.

    Michael,

Thanks for the quick response! I've tried it several times, logging out and back in, holding down Option keys when clicking on "Purchases" icon, clicking on items, etc. Things getting weird.

I have installed Evernote this way, which shows "Installed" in the "Purchases" list. Now when I click on the Evernote from the list (after I have installed it from the MAS in Lion) it still shows "Free" and allow me to install again on its own page (even it shows "Installed" in the "Purchases" list).

Other apps (i.e. I have MplayerX and Caffeine I will definetely need) are still shown "Installed" both in the list and on its own pages, which prevents me from installing them again.

I clarify, I have partitioned my MBP's internal disk (500G) into two partitions, "Mac HD" which is the Snow Leopard and "Lion" with the new system. In Lion system I could see the SL partition completely and I didn't see any ways to "umount" the partition. However if the above MAS problem was because that it sees the old apps in SL partition, it doesn't really explain why some of the apps are listed installable but some are now.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Hm. I don't know what to say... The only thing I can think that might be the problem is, as I mentioned, the MAS is detecting that the apps are already installed on the other partition and won't let you install to another.

I just realized that I can eject the "Mac HD" from Finder, and then all apps are available for installation! Thanks Michael!!

    Hi rohitfromdouglas,

At the top of the Mac App Store there is an "Purchases" button. By clicking on that you will get a list of all apps you have previously purchased / downloaded for free, which you can download them again at no cost.

If the app is no longer visible in Purchases, then go  to

    Store menu>View my Account.

Hopefully the item will be now be listed under "View Hidden Purchases," and you can then "unhide" it.

Thank you. It worked! Uh does anyone know how to fix iTunes error 51 regarding the host files? I know, unrelated question but does anyone know how to fix it? My iTunes won't restore any iDevices.

You need to open the hosts file (/etc/hosts) on your Macintosh HD and delete the row with the gs.apple.com domain... then you should not have any problems with hosts!
