"SuperDuper" backup from shirt-pocket.com -- comments?

It's a fine piece of SW; as is Carbon Copy Cloner, SilverKeeper, etc. Go to the various forum sites for them and do a bit of reading. Additionally, see the e-book on backups at TidBITs.

I bought my copy a couple of weeks ago and it's great. It explains everything the app will do and I really can't complain, it does a great job.

The only thing that I find annoying is that it will change your external HD's icon and copy your internal HD's icon over. So if you like your external HD's icon, make a backup of your icon! LOL

I think that happens because you are "cloning" the internal drive to the external, therefore the icon changes to the one that was set as the internal's icon. BTW, you can find many collections of icons at The Iconfactory.

I would recommend paying the extra $20. This allows you to perform "Smart Updates" which are great. They update the external drive so that it is exactly like the internal, deleting or adding files as needed. It's a great way of incremental backups and takes only 10min on my 3/4 full 60GB HD.

SuperDuper gets a lot of guerilla marketing, almost unfairly.

It's ok, it does "call home" when you launch it (install Little Snitch), which I find a substancial security risk for a program that takes your admin password. (after all programs can alter other programs)

If have found Deja Vu more to my liking, it's a System Preference pane that auto clones and auto backups when you want, even when your logged out, even over a network. Guess it almost qualifies as spyware 🙂

Only to check if you're running the latest version, just like many other apps. It's user selectable in the preferences: uncheck "auto check for new version" if you don't want it. That feature has nothing to do with spyware.
