I want MMS without my iphone trying to access the internet at the same time, and charging me for it!

Hi all!

I want MMS without my iphone trying to access the internet at the same time, and charging me for it!

Is there any way to block data access in my iphone without blocking MMS? I do not want nor need internet access on the iphone, but I do want to send MMS. But if I don't block data access, the phone keeps trying to access the internet and charges me for it. Checking for updates, some say. Then why is it that the iphone doesn't update when i'm on wi-fi?

One solution would be to make the iphone access the internet ONLY through wifi, and never with 3G and GSM. Is it possible?

Thanks all.

iPhone 3GS, iOS 4.3.1

WiFi only for MMS would work if your phone was not under contract and you did not have a phone plan or data plan. But, as far as I know, with an iPhone, in order to get phone service, you need a phone plan with a data plan.

If you're with AT&T, I just changed my plan to the new Unlimited Text plan, which includes unlimited Mobile>Mobile calls. Any Mobile phone, not just At&T. That allowed me to drop down to the 450 nationwide plan, since most of my calls are to other mobile phones..

Thanks, Joe Gramm, but i don't have a data plan. I bought the iphone in Hong Kong, where it is possible to purchase it unlocked and without any plan at all, i just use my usual pre-paid economic plan, with no data included.

Curiously, i too have a plan with unlimited SMS and MMS, but in order to send MMS i have to turn on mobile data, and as soon as i do it, the iphone tries to access the internet. Up to now, the only way i've found to block unwanted internet access was to block ALL mobile data, and that unfortunately includes MMS...

That is right, probe_droid. This happens only on iOS4. It has been said in forums around the internet that this is just a way to steal money from distracted people, or to make them get a data plan, and that Apple has done it by request of the cell providers. There is no other plausible reason for this regression in the iOS4, and for Apple's silence even after all the complaints around the internet. It is, i think, a discredit for a company like Apple, to use a stratagem loke this, not unlike all the things Microsoft does.

Actualy, there's an easy solution, which i centainly will do if i can't find any better: go back to iOS 3.X...

Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data : set this to "OFF". The effect will be that no cellular data traffic (e.g., Internet over cellular network) will take place. SMS and MMS will be unaffected (if you subscribe to MMS service; if you do not have MMS service, your carrier may implement delivery of MMS content by SMS providing a link to content on a web page).

Turning off the 3G service doesn't affect cellular data usage, it only affects the speed and the battery usage.

Note that turning off cellular data does disable visual voice-mail, which relies on the service.

Thanks J D McIninch.

But the fact is that MMS is controled by that Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data option.

Maybe "cellular data" was the name given to this option on iOS3, which left MMS on, while blocking other data.

In iOS4, the "cellular data" option is called "mobile data", and includes MMS.

I have it turned off now. If i turn it on, i can send the MMS, but the iphone instantly accesses the internet and the provider charges me for it.

A note: i have free MMS, so i know it's the internet.

In my iPhone with iOS4 it is still called cellular data, if yours is called "Mobile Data" that is probably because of the carrier settings. I tried mine turning off Cellular Data, it will not allow MMS to be sent. There is no work around for this apparently other than to have a data plan, it uses just a minor amount of cell data when it sends one. If you need MMS without using cellular data, sell your iPhone and take the profit and buy a simpler phone that isn't built around having a data plan.

Or as someone else pointed out try using Google MMS, if it is available to you.

MMS may not "work" in the sense that you cannot send MMS without cellular data, but you should be able to receive MMS messages as URLs (as opposed to the actual MMS message).

Keep in mind that MMS is not like SMS. MMS does depend on Internet access to send and receive the media content. When you send data by MMS, your handset encodes the media as a MIME message and posts it to an MMSC (special web service provided by your carrier). The carrier then determines the recipient and either forwards to another carrier, or forwards an SMS controll message with the URL at which to receive the media content. Depending on how your account is configured with your carrier, you will either receive an SMS message with a URL, or your phone will automatically receive the URL and try fetch the media content from the carrier's server and display it in your SMS/MMS application.

The key part is that MMS always requires cellular data (Internet) access to send MMS data, and optionally requires it to retrieve the message (if it's disabled, you *should* receive an SMS message with a URL where you can find your MMS content, but that's up to the carrier).

For MMS to work normally, cellular data is required. That's inherent in the protocol. Look up the Wikipedia entry on MMS for details.

Thanks J D McIninch.

That cleared a few things i didn't know.

In the past i have recieved a link to a MMS message, back when i had a phone that didn't support it.

This time i don't get even the links.

It is interesting to know that MMS requires cellular data. But the problem remains: just about any other cell phone in the world can recieve MMS without trying to contact the internet in some other way all the time. And when my iphone had the iOS 3.X, this problem didn't happen, and now it does with iOS 4.3.1.

The fact is that the problem is not with the MMS or cellular data itself, but with the iphone iOS. Something in there now tries constantly to reach the internet, and it cannot be blocked because i don' know what it is. Automatic updates, i guess. What puzzles me more is that this didn't happen with iOS3 and now it happens with iOS4, everyone that complains about this problem says the same, so it must be a iOS thing.

Since Apple doesn't seem to be bothered by these complaints, i was looking for some app or whatever that bloqued this cell data...

Anyway, thank you and thanks to all who tried to help.
