OS X Lion - Odd flashing of desktop and EXTREMELY slow

A day or so ago my MacBook Pro went into this odd perfomance state:

Symptoms:

Starts "normally"

Logs in "normally"

Once it gets to the desktop it loads everything (dock and top menu)

*There have been times that the menu or dock does not, in fact, load...* but not everytime.

Here is where it gets odd:

Desktop seems to "flash" every couple of minutes, causing the dock to disapear and reapear. Quick gray screen and then back to the desktop and dock reapear.

iDisk now shows "previous iDisk"

Icons art seems to come and go depending on the restart.

SLOW.. this does not begin to describe it. Everything I do is like it takes 3 minutes for it to think about it and execute. Even something as simple as right clicking for a menu on the desktop. Pluging in an external drive.

They execute or open, but each step takes minutes.

Spinning ball and everything between cycles. ...

The last couple of restarts have made applications unable to run. (Safari)

I can get disk utility to run... but the odd slowness and flash restarting makes running "repair permissions" an 8 hour process. (Completed)

Restarting in Safe Mode has the same symptoms....

I tried running Time Machine, but it took 12 hours to "back up" 2 gigs... so I gave up.

No idea what I can do. Help?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.1)

I would reinstall Lion:

Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.

Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

How much free disk space do you have left? OS X starts wigging out like this when disk gets tight, and reinstalling could exacerbate the problem. If you've got less than about 20 GB free on your boot volume, move some files to an external device.

If your free space is mysteriously shrinking, turn off local Time Machine snapshots by entering this command in Terminal:

sudo tmutil disablelocal

If you did run out of disk, clear as much space as you can, then reboot and run Verify in Disk Utility. If any odd behavior persists, reinstall Lion to replace any files that were damaged.

Double-check all files you saved while your system was in this state.

Good luck.
