Editing problem

I have been using iPhoto for some time with no problem. Just recently, when I am attempt to open recent files for editing I get the message, "The volume for .jpg cannot be found." The photos have been transferred from a Nikon Coolpix 5000. The recent problems seemed to occur after I had backed up the photos on an external drive. If I connect that drive, the photos will edit.

The iPhoto version is actually '09.

iPhoto '08, Mac OS X (10.6.8), The product is iPhoto '09

It sounds very like these photos are Referenced rather than Managed.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?

A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package

A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
