How do I turn off the "bong" start up tone without turning off all other sounds?

The start up tone is an important part of the start up sequence however if you want turn it off there are utilties that will do that. You can use Google to find one.

BTW, if you look in your owners manual it says;

"If you‘ll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When youriMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass thestartup process."

My recommendation, follow the manual and don't shut the computer down.

Usually it is not a good idea to turn off the Startup Sound since it is an indication of the Pre-Startup-Testing being successful or not.

But I understand that there are situations in which one doesn't want/need that sound.
