Undefined socket error

My Ichat keeps saying that it is disconnected and that there is an undefined socket error.

Hi,

Does it list or refer to the Service type ?

AIM Socket Error or Jabber Socket Error

If it is AIM then go to the iChat Menu > Preferences >Accounts and the Server Setting tab for the AIM Login.

Change the port to 443.
Try Logging in (Use this Account on the Account Info tab)

If this does not solve it come back to the pane and disable SSL

Try logging in again.

If that still does not work go to the Home Folder/Library/Preferences (To do this in Lion need you to go to the Finder's Go Menu > Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Preferences).

Delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist (And it's Lockfile if Lion/iChat 6) by Dragging it to the Trash

Restart iChat.

Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat"

Ok...

I can read this two ways:-

no it was...

Either No, It was. Meaning it was an AIM based name or that you meant No, it was... and didn't finish telling me what sort of Account/Screen Name it was.

So, was it Jabber ? (Googletalk is also Jabber based)

If you Open the Console App (Applications/Utilities) does and error message show up there regarding iChat ?

Possibly referring to Error 60.

Something like this:-

9/9/11 7:22:46 PM iChatAgent[168] WARNING: JConnection: Error: Could not connect to host jabber.xxxservername.xxx, type=0, code=60

I don't get a pop message in iChat about this. It just tells me I connect connect.

With the particular server I was using for this I have tried port 5222 and port 5223 and also checked on line and cannot find if the people that run it still run a Jabber server.

Are you using a Proxy to connect to the Internet ?

Pop Up messages that sasy it can't connect and list "Undefined Socket Error" tend to be more frequent with AIM Logins but can appear for both.

iChat does not particularly do well with Proxies so that might be a cause.

As I hinted at the server, if a Jabber one, may be Off Line.

Deleting the Account type .plist (com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist or the AIM one) normally corrects this.

Have you tried restarting your Mac ?
