How to set default language for typing english if my OS language is russian?

Hi. I cant figure out how to set english as default typing language. Opening Skype, new browser window, vpn client, switches my input to russian (my os language). Especially this annoys if im trying to enter login and password.

Mac OS X (10.7.1)

Go to system settings --> language and text --> sources

check a second language (e.g. English) in the list additionally to the one still checked.

check "allow different sources" on the right side.

This allows you to switch the keyboard language (layout) for every document even more than once while editing a text (by clicking the appearing little flag in the menu bar) if you need it.

Москва or Moscow is just a click away.

Have you tried getting rid of Russian (uncheck its box) from the Input Sources for a while, so that only US is possible? Then you could add Russian back and see if it is still default.

You may need to reinstall and choose US to get what you want.

This is really weird: the password fields should all switch to English to allow correct password entry regardless of your current input language. Anyway, setting language priority on the list has nothing to do with input languages; it is for setting application locales priority - the language in which the apps and OS itself appear to you.

I don't know how to set "default" input language, so I would recommend you setting "use the same language in all documents" in input sources. This will stop resetting language every time you switch application / document. Also, it works not as the default setting, but as "the last used". For instance, if you switch your Mac off with Russian active, this will be the keybord which you will see on the next login.

Maybe, setting input language on per-document basis is working the same way? Then OS just remebers you used Russian for skype last time, thus setting it on again next time you launch skype.

But still when i setting cursor in Google Chrome addrese bar, or my vpn client password field it switches to russian

Changeing language (e.g. to have english menues or keybord layout) on a system, took place in applications too only if the application supports that language, or uses by default the system librarys to adopt the language settings.

Not all applications use automatically the system librarys of your Mac for language settings or spell checking. Most will do so, some only during installation, some never.

Applications can have own language settings others have only the installation language available.

Have you checked this on Chrome (Wrench -> Options -> Advanced -> Change Fonts and language settings -> Language -> Google Chrome language) and your VPN Client?

I'm having a similar issue lately and it's driving me crazy! My intereface language has always been English(and Language&Text->Language) has English on top).I have installed a Greek layout and a Chinese one besides the English one.

Well, one day I suddenly realized it was changing my language to greek on itsown! So frustrating. Passwords, URLs, every input field on every app switches to greek when clicking on them! I haven't installed any new software the past few months and definitely not any tool tha messes with the languages...

In the "Language&Text->Input sources" I can only select the installed input methods, I can't change their order and greek appears higher than english... When does one change the default keyboard layout for the mac? The has to be a place for that!

Anyway, I temporarily disabled the "Allow a different one for each document" option hoping to at least minimize the frustration...
