Q: .cwk how to find all documents that are created by Claris Works and Apple Works

I too have the problem of no longer being able to use .CWK documents if I switch to Lion

Now I need to find all the documents created by CW or AW, and have done a normal search using .cwk as criteria and cannot find them all. I know there are documents that do not have a .cwk behind them as they where originally created in OS 7, 8 or 9, or thereabouts and in years of upgrading the .cwk got lost.

Any tips as to how to find them all, in order to translate them or store them as PDF?

My point about refining the creator code BOBO results by further restricting to type CWGR is that all CWGR files are BOBO files--that is, the CWGR files are a nested set inside the BOBO set. Spotlight will move more slowly with two search terms than it does with one, and, for your purposes, only one is needed. (Offering more information than you probably need. . . .)

You can use these Raw Query searches for each of the AW/CW subtypes:

(Drawings) kMDItemFSTypeCode=CWGR

(Paintings) kMDItemFSTypeCode=CWPT

(Spreadsheets) kMDItemFSTypeCode=CWSS

(Presentations) kMDItemFSTypeCode=CWPR

(Databases) kMDItemFSTypeCode=CWDB

(Wordprocessing) kMDItemFSTypeCode=CWWP

Hi!
I have these really old CW or AW documents too.
Do a finder search for com.apple.appleworks.document If you have some old pictures created in CW search for Quickdraw

Then I don't think you any more on the computer! Even the files saved in CW2 from 1995 show up on my computer.
You could go through your folder and sort them by Kind and see if any turns up.

Open a Finder window for your hard disk. Search on 'appleworks', clicking 'contents'. When you get the results click on the header for the 'kind' column to bring all the Appleworks documents together (you will probably get a lot of spurious results as well).

Roger, do think it is a localisation thing that it says Appleworks Document on your computer and com.apple.appleworks.document on mine? I will go to my test account which is in English and see.

The test showed I had quite a few named Appleworks document mostly newer AW docs, but some from the 90s too.

Mine would all be AW6 (probably) - I go back to 1993 and ClarisWorks 2 but of course would have converted each time I upgraded through to AW 5 and 6.

That seems to show more than when I searched for .cwk. I will start converting stuff and let you know if not everything worked properly. Thanks Fruhulda and Roger for chipping in.

mm question is does it show al, If I search under .cwk I get lot of them but not all, specially the old ones.

The real old ones doesn't have any file extension.

Both AW and CW use BOBO as the creator code for files. You could search for AW/CW files by creator code:

In Finder, open a Find window (Cmd-F).
Under Kind, select Other …, then Raw Query.
Next to Raw Query oval, put this case-sensitive search string in the box:

kMDItemFSCreatorCode=BOBO

It does work for me on a MBP (running Snow Leopard) that is littered with AW and CW files dating back to the era of a PowerBook 3400.
