Headache or eyestrain?

Has anybody found a solution or explination for getting headaches and/or feeling dizzy after using ipad 2 for any length of time? I love the device but fear that I am going to have to sell it since I can't really use it comfortablely. I hate to say this because I love apple products but my wife bought a ASUS tablet and I can use it just fine!??? What the heck? Anybody else go through this?

I'm thinking this is not a widespread problem since there are very few posts on it.

I wear progressive bifocal lenses all the time and have no problem using my iPad. I often sit in a living room sofa chair with the iPad in my lap. Sometimes I move it wrong and the iPad rotates the screen. That causes some confusion temporally but if need be I can lock the screen so it does not rotate. I've never had to do that though.

I also use my iPad at the dining room table. It is much easier for me to type there but if my posture isn't just right my neck does get tired. To over come that I need to sit up straight and have my chair pushed in much like I'd have it when I'm eating dinner. I find I can work on my iPad at the table for several hours with no problem just so long as my coffee cup get filled regularly ; )

It is due to the backlight LED flickering. This will cause foremost heachache, dizziness, and nausea. No amount of bad eyesight will cause dizziness or nausea in such a short time - if ever. EF-radiation, glare? Read it in the dark you'll get sicker still, turn it away from you and you get the same radiation but you'll feel infinitely better. My Ipad 2 flickers a lot, I can't use it. It's strange that very few can see the flicker. You can google "led flicker mac headache" and you'll find dozens if not hundreds of people complaining about mac (or any other) laptops with LED-screens. ALL LED-screens flicker since this is the method they use for dimming. No other solution than to bin the ipad.

Cheers

Thanks for the info. I really wish I could use the iPad without the discomfort. It's wierd, because I can use my wife's ASUS Transformer tablet with no problems, and it uses LED backlighting technology! Maybe flickering at a different rate?? Do you own a iPhone and does it effect you the same way as the iPad??

That's the weird thing about it. I'm pretty sure that my old Toshiba laptop with LED-backlight and my current Lenovo work laptop with LED flicker visibly more than, for example, the ipad 2. Yet I do not get a headache out of them. Also, my new 27" screen, also LED, doesn't give me any problems what-so-ever, which makes a long time sufferer like me very happy - believe me.

However I couldn't stand looking at an eee pc (again, appeared to flicker less) or one BenQ full hd monitor. So you're right. It has very little to do with flicker in general and everything to do with the frequency, or possibly some oscillation(?) if the flicker is not completely even. Even between manufacturers there can be big differences. As for the iPhone, I don't own one. I've never had any problems when I've used one of my friends' but lacking long time "exposure" I can't be sure.

The problems appear to get worse the darker the screen (or lower rate of flicker) and better if the screen is at full brighness. Also, futurewise around the corner, OLED screens may be better since each pixel is lit-up separately with a different flicker rate should the brightness be different, and thus cancelling each other out and making for a near non-flicker picture. But I'm just guessing here, no real experience. And yup, I'd wish I could use the iPad as much as I wanted to, and owning an android phone (2.3) with a big screen I know that androids are not quite there yet software, quality or usability-wise.

Also, I wanted to agree with you regarding your comment "I've never had any problems when I've used one of my friends' iPhone, but lacking long time "exposure" I can't be sure. That is the same with me, usually it takes a while before I experience any real bothersome effects (headache, dizziness, etc..) with these devices. How long did it take before you noticed any effects with your IPad???

yeah ive been getting the same thing. really bad headaches as soon as the ipad turns on. its the same headaches i get from using a mobile phone, or laptop - except much worse with ipad.

ok, im not sure about your instance, but in my case:

- its not glare from the screen as headaches appear even if i turn on the device, hold it with both hands, but dont look at the screen.

- i thought it was a standard emf issue, however my macbook pro has considerably more emf output than the ipad (i think) and the mb pro doesnt give me the headaches as quickly.

- i turned wifi off and attempted to operate the device, persistant headache was immediate (whilst rendering the device totally useless of course)

- so im wondering now what else the device emitts ?

anyway.. best of luck.

NOt sure if you can change it with the iPad but the flicker may change as the frequency of the screen does. Many computer screens are set at 60Hz, maybe changing that will change the rate of flicker and how much it bothers you.

Another thing to do, don't use it in the dark. Even if you just have a book light, have another source of light to make it easier on your eyes in a dim room.
