assigning midi knobs to garageband on M-AUDIO OZONE

greetings. i have a mac g4. i am running garageband 1.1.0 panther is my OS, 10.3.9 (i know this is all vintage, but as i have read, the ozone is of the same vintage my mac and os is...).

i would like to assign the midi control knobs to the virtual synth controls in garage band, so i could use them to control cutoff, resonance, etc. there has to be a way to do this, right??!! please help! thanks.

GB does not offer any MIDI mapping features for controllers. There are a couple of controllers that have pluggins to control some of the main features of GB's user interface, but nothing like resonance etc specifically associated with one of GB's software instrument. The most likely use of something like this with a software instrument would be to record the the changes in real time as automation. Because you can't do this with GB, the next best thing is to use GB's automation features to manually tweak modulation, cutoff, resonance, attack, decay, release etc. To do this you have to

1. Add an Automation by clicking the Automation button in the track header.

2. Choose 'Add Automation' from the drop down menu.

3. Once there, you will be offered a menu to choose to add automation for various things. Use the little triangle unfold button to reveal all the things you can automate wuth this particular instrument. Choose an option.

4. Now you can enter points to create automation curves for your chosen feature.

Hope that helps 🙂

is this the case even in the most recent garageband?!!

Yes.

The only hardware controller I know of that gives ability to control aspects of a GB Sound Generator is the now discontinued M-Audio iControl. Its not smooth as the knobs are indented so they click and create a series of little mini jumps as you turn them. Also, you cannot record your tweaking. 😐

okay, i found a way around this! ;-)

on ebay, i found an original, unopened copy of NOVATION BASS STATION! this is an AU plugin, and it does MORE than any of the garageband soft synths! the setup is a graphic view of the classic bass station synth! there are 3 lfos, a vcf, and more! there are a ton of presets, one even named MOOG!

with this plugin, which can be used in garageband, you can EASILY assign the OZONE knobs to cutoff, resonance, etc! ;-)

here are the MIDI codes, if anybody gets this AU plugin!

1 - Mod wheel
2 - Breath
5 - Portamento
7 - Master volume
12 - Osc sync
13 - LFO waveform
14 - Osc 1 waveform
15 - Osc 2 waveform
16 - LFO speed
17 - LFO delay
18 - LFO sync rate
20 - Osc 1 env mod depth
21 - Osc 1 LFO mod depth
22 - Osc 1 PWM depth
23 - Osc 2 semitone tune
24 - Osc 2 fine tune
25 - Osc 2 LFO mod depth
26 - Osc 2 env mod depth
27 - Osc 2 PWM depth
28 - Osc 1/2 mix
34 - Osc voice mode
35 - Filter LFO mod depth
40 - Filter slope
41 - Osc 2 Octave
64 - Sustain pedal
105 - Filter cutoff
106 - Filter resonance
107 - Filter env mod depth
108 - Amp env attack
109 - Amp env decay
110 - Amp env sustain
111 - Amp env release
112 - Amp env velocity mod
114 - Mod env attack
115 - Mod env decay
116 - Mod env sustain
117 - Mod env release

You might be able to do some of that with Midipipe, a free MIDI mapper:

However, if delving into that level of control is what you want, you may want to check out more versatile software.

i am not sure if BASS STATION is still available as an AU plugin anymore, but i found my copy on ebay, of the same vintage of my g4 mac.

an update to all facing this issue...google KVR AUDIO! there are TONS of FREE synth audio plugs for download there! here are a few...midi learnable (meaning, no need to learn midi codes like on bass station!)

DaHornet: a very similar replica to the classic '70s WASP synthesizer! midi learnable!

TalElek7ro: a powerful analog feel synth with dual oscillators, filter and more!

Mopis: another powerful analog feel synth!

Automat: this synth will allow you to loop/stack notes. i cannot seem to get it to midilearn though. please reply if you figure this out!

Crystal. this crashes garageband, might be a ram issue.

many of these are in both AU and VST formats. for some reason, i can only get the audio units to work, but there are lots of these to choose from!

have fun! the best things in life are truly free! ;-)
