Why does saving this 1/2 hour video in Final Cut Pro x wipe my hard drive of all GB?

I'm saving to my external hard drive but it never completes the save without saying "Your startup disk is almost full"

I'M NOT SAVING TO MY STARTUP DISK, I'M SAVING TO MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE!!

MacBook 13' Aluminum, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPhone 4 32GB, iPod 30GB, iPad 2 16GB

How full is your startup disk? You will always need some amount of space on your startup disk for system uses such as VM. You need to use a "Final Cut Events" folder on your external drive: http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/faq/
