How do I delete these stupid time machine snapshots/backups!?

I can't be the only one having this problem. Tried the sudo command in the terminal, and while that STOPPED the time machine from backing up to my local drive, the 60GB of tv shows I just deleted from my iTunes folder are still taking up 60GB, only now it's classified as a "backup".

Turning Time Machine on automatically when Laptop users upgraded to Lion is probably the dumbest move Apple has ever made, and there's NO explanation for how to delete backups ANYWHERE. I've been trying for hours.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.1)
