How Do I Keep iPhone 3G from turning off?

Question

I plan to turn my iPhone3G into my alarm clock. Problem is that after a few mintues it turn off!!

Anyway to program it to NOT turn off???

Is it actually turning off or is the screen simply turning off to conserve power as it is designed to do?
