strange error message about user name

Attempting to use Face Time for first time on my IMac, and receive this message upon set up:

"Unable to varify (my email address) because it is already in use by another Apple ID"

This is not the case since I use my email address for many other functions where a Apple ID is needed.

Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
