New MacBook Air (2011) battery charging problem !

Hi, I got my New MBA on Friday the 9th ; I wanted to charge it today (for the third time) but the battery didn't charge higher than 96% and it is written "recharged". What should I do ?

That's my First Apple Device... A 13inch MBA...

Yes, nothing of the ordinary, the battery needs a few cycles. The capacity may fluctuate several percent, nothing to worry about.

Coconutbattery says "age of your Mac" and not "age of your battery".

You can read here about batteries:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/

and

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1490

In System Profiler (Applications/Utilities/, or AppleLogo/More info/) you will find more on your Mac and everything that is in the Mac.

Where did you buy the MBA, Apple Store, Reseller, what country?

Was it a special offer?

The latest MacBookAir4,2 (A1369) is produced since July this year: this is the one with the Thunderbolt connection socket; before that the MacBookAir3,2 was produced, with the Mini Display port socket.

With a few cycles I mean 3 to 5.

How many cycles Coconutbattery is saying the battery has?

I don't know why Coconutbattery says 8 months, but probably because it is indeed 8 months old.

The modelnumber of your MBA is under your AppleLogo/MoreInfo/Hardware (left top menu bar). Give it here and we will tell you how old your MBA is approximately.

If you got it in a box there is a little manual with it, and it will tell you whether you have the Minidisplayport or the Thunderbolt port (look at the drawings that explain the ports.

the Battery is new, the MBA is new, so Coconutbattery is not telling the truth.

Uninstall Coconutbattery (see below), empty the Trash can, download Coconutbattery again, install it.

To uninstall:

Download the app "Appcleaner V2.0.5" (free, http://freemacsoft.net/#), install it,

Quit Coconutbattery,

Start Appcleaner, drag (in Finder) Coconutbattery from the Applications Folder onto the Appcleaner, Delete everything,

Empty the Trash can.

Now you can install the new downloaded Coconutbattery.

What does it say?

Ah, I made a reply yesterday evening, it has disappeared.

I try to repeat it again:

Don't worry: you have the most beautiful and enviable MacbookAir! It's the latest version, and it's battery is also new. I guess there's nothing wrong with it. The only thing that is different with my MBP's is that there is 6,4 power usage (obviously with the charger in), could you check one thing for me:

Start Acitvity Monitor (in Utilities), and for <all processes>, click on the %CPU column, are there any processes that continiously use more than say 15%?

The battery values vary a bit, that's not abnormal (in my MBP they vary between 92-103%; 90 cycles, 28 months), they are absolutely not giving the impression that there is something wrong with the battery, it's life is not determined by what Coconutbattery says (a good utility btw), but by the number of cycles, read the pages I gave the links of.

Another thing: there is an EFI update, look in the Software Update (EFI is an hardware layer, compare bios in a PC):

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1448.

If you do not have "problems", it is still good to update, because it may solve some issue that you have not encountered yet.

don't worry, have fun with your fantastic 13" MBA,

happy computing,

Lex
