keyboard shortcut for end of line

I am having a problem with the keyboard shortcut to go to the end of the line or beginning of the line. I have a 2011 Mac Mini with OS Lion. According to the online shortcut sheets I should use the Command Key + Arrow key right/left. This is not working. I tried to program the acction in Setting/Keyboard shortcuts, but it would not recognize the action. I do not have a Mac keyboard, but this same keyboard worked on my previous Mac-mini. Before I did control + arrow key, but that does not work on this system either. Any ideas?

If you are using a "windows" keyboard, the end of line command is: Windows Key and right or left arrow.
