What type of files? If you mean files in your Home folder such as documents, then just drag them from one place to another.

Kappy is right but if you want to clone the drive try this:
The cloned drive will be bootable provided you format the external to GUID Partition with Disk Utility.

what format is the external hard drive? NTFS? FAT? exFAT?
what are you trying to copy?
try creating the same folder in your external and go to the folder in your macbook and try copying the contents and pasting it to the folder you just created in your external drive.
see if that sorts it out for you.

Make sure the external hard drive is formatted for a mac, (open disk utility and erase the disk to a mac os journaled format)
its FAT
