Keyboard gives garbled text

My daughter's MacBook (same configuration as mine) is giving garbled text when one types on the keyboard.

The text that appears is mostly Greek lower case but also the square root, copyright sign etc.

It used to type fine in English, then this started to happen occasionally and would go away with a restart.

Now it wont go away. I've thrown away the caches, zapped the PRAM and done a disk repair.

Any ideas?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 2.4 GHz 13"

Probably the keyboard, but check for things like a swelling battery (can cause pressure on the underside of the keyboard).

If that looks OK, you may be able to tease the opt key out and see if there's something contaminating the contacts below, or if they're physically damaged. Do that with mains off and the battery removed!

If there's physical damage you may need to replace the keyboard, if it's a contaminant it may be possible to clean it up using the electronics spray cleaner available from places like Maplin or Radio Shack (are they still in business?). Otherwise you're back to the keyboard replacement.

Don't use any other type of cleaner and ensure the whole lot's completely evaporated before putting the key back and restoring power.

(I'm assuming here that the MB isn't in warranty - if it is, just take it in)
