FCE4 freezes when I begin to capture from video camera. Any ideas?

My FCE4 suddenly stopped capturing video from my camera about 2 months ago. I have iMac 10.5.8 2.4 ghz running Mac OS X. Using FCE4 and canon HV30. I have used for almost 3years with no problem.The entire computer "freezes" (not just the program) during the first 2 seconds of capture. Any ideas?
