I just got my iphone yesterday and really want to switch up the apps, wallpaper, etc, but I have no idea how. I have heard its through applications? What ones are best for doing that? Thanks in advance for any help.
You can switch the wallpaper in the settings, not sure what you mean by 'switch up apps'. You can tap and hold on apps to move them or on top of each other to make a folder.
Sorry I should have clarified that.. I mean to change the look of them with different versions of the apps i find online..
Take a look at the user guide http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_iOS4_User_Guide.pdf, also the iPhone has about 425,000 apps I am sure a few thousand would apply to customizing the wall paper. Do a search in the iTunes store, take a look at the reviews.

You can't change the 'look' of an icon/app. Only the developer can do that.
